Short Term Exchanges (1-4 weeks)

Short term exchanges give you the opportunity of working in a different system and culture. Being part of a school in another country allows you to reflect on your own teaching practice and situation, develop new approaches and bring a global dimension into your own classroom on your return. Short term exchanges are usually reciprocal; you will be matched with a teacher in another country who will visit you and your school in return. These visits normally take place in term time in the host country and during holiday time in the ‘sending’ country; this means that no supply cover is needed, and you will not be totally responsible for teaching a class the whole time, unlike with a longer exchange.

Depending on the length of the exchange, you will build from observing/ introductory sessions to a range of activities including teaching groups and whole classes- this will be negotiated between you and the host school. A similar system will apply when your host teacher returns, giving you a valuable global dimension to your classes (not to mention an extra pair of hands in the classroom).

Exchanges normally take place on a home-to-home basis; you (or someone in your school) would be expected to host the visiting teacher, and you would stay with them. Our partner organisations will be responsible for risk assessment and police checks on any teachers taking part. In cases where it is not possible to stay with a host teacher (for example, in Uganda teachers often work far from home and stay in shared accommodation during the week) suitable accommodation will be found for you in a guest house or hotel. Each teacher is responsible for their own subsistence and local travel costs.

A short term teacher exchange gives you a real opportunity to develop lasting personal and school links.
