Why International?

Today’s generation of children and young people are growing up in a world which is becoming continuously more and more inter-dependant. In Britain we come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds – it essential that the educated person has a real understanding of Britain’s place in the world.

Our education systems are themselves more closely related than ever before. Good practice in one part of the world is drawn on by politicians and others as examplars of what may be applied here. In many cases there are lessons to be learnt and new practice to be implemented, but in others, what may have been effective in one culture may not work in another. Those professionally involved in schools are in the best position to make that judgment, but they can only do that from a position of knowledge and understanding. And in most cases the best way to make that judgment is to go and see for yourself.

There is now much evidence to show that standards in schools can show a real improvement if children are able to be in direct contact (through the internet) with children in other countries. The most effective way to begin these contacts is for teachers first to meet face to face to develop their ideas and plans.

Finally – and not to be underestimated – we have much evidence to show that teachers who have visited schools in another country as part of a professional programme, have returned home intellectually hugely refreshed and reinvigorated. The people that benefit most from that are the young people in their classrooms.
